The Mill House Restaurant Maui Restaurant Review

There are two dining areas and a bar area, both open air overlooking the plantation. The seating on the water side of the restaurant had a far better view. We had lunch fairly early and it was quite busy (a sign of a good meal to come!). One of the beauties of dining at The Mill House Maui is the exceptional service.

Consider working your way up from a lower sleeping elevation to a higher one, since the critical factor — for altitude purposes — is where you spend the night. Many people experience the morning altitude headache, in which “your skull feels too small for the pulse that’s coming,” said Steve House, the founder of Uphill Athlete, a company that offers high-altitude endurance coaching. The Milk and Honey dessert was also a surprise; it sounded kind of plain on the menu. There’s hints of citrus in the cake, even without the slices of grapefruit, and the whole thing is light, bright and slightly sweet.

FOOD

Located in Central Maui, the Tropical Express Tour, sometimes called the Mill House Plantation Tour, is a fun train ride tour around a pineapple farm. After touring the Maui Tropical Plantation, there’s a delicious meal to be had at the Mill House Restaurant. This post includes a video of one of the best attractions for foodies on Maui, plus a full tour of the Mill House lunch menu. Start your meal at this farm to table in Maui restaurant with an order of the root vegetable fritters alongside a cool cilantro mint yogurt dipping sauce.

The newly-transformed Cafe O’Lei at the Mill House serves up fresh island eats made with artistic flair. Set in the center of the Maui Tropical Plantation, this Wailuku favorite lets you kick back in tropical paradise while enjoying brunch, lunch, dinner, or dessert and drinks. Although they are under new ownership, their fine dining aesthetic, flavorful foods, and incredible views are just as good as before. Café O’Lei saved the day by swooping up the Mill House and transforming it into their very own Waikapu Valley eatery.

Holy panna cotta – where have you been my whole life? Now I’m going to ALWAYS order the panna cotta when I see it on menus. The Mill House Restaurant’s buttermilk panna cotta is so memorable. It’s a creamy, gelatin dessert that’s almost like a chilled version of crème brûlée.

Don’t skip the cocktail menu featuring cold-pressed sugarcane and local elixirs. Happy hour brings craft beer for $5, a half-dozen plates (including the burger, two chicken bao buns, and squash pizza with runny egg and truffled brie) for $10, and Koloa rum cocktails for $8 to $12. Foodies will want to book a seat at the weekly Chef’s Table ($150), a communal, multicourse meal with conversation with chefs, live music, sparkling wine, and gratuity included in the cost. Coffee comes from Mill House Roasting Co., which also has an onsite cafe with locally made pastries (open daily 8am–4pm). The Mill House also offers an adjacent dining experience at Maui Chef’s Table, where foodies can experience behind the scenes creativity and engage with the chef. Communal seating and anecdotal comments from the chef as he prepares your farm to table meal make this is an informative and engaging dining experience.

Anyone traveling above 8,000 feet may be at risk for altitude sickness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These restaurants and cafés hold themselves to a higher eco-standard that make deciding where to eat for ocean-minded people an easy decision. The chickpea panisse is normally on the dinner menu and a full sized serving is $18. Brant pulled together a sample for us to try because he loves it, himself. These light little cakes are on a bed of barley, root vegetable, smoked creme fraiche and fennel jam (usually served with harissa, but this was totally fine). The smokiness of the creme fraiche and the touch of sweetness from the jam were addicting, having subtle sweet, savory and smoky flavors in each bite.

Servers and bartenders are eager to share what’s thriving at the plantation’s farms and across the island, whether it’s fresh corn served with Calabrian chili butter or a Shrub Royale cocktail accented with lemon, guava, and dragonfruit. Always attentive—and eminently knowledgeable—The Mill House’s servers can help you and your crew decide on the right portions—and flavors—for a satisfying experience. Nestled into the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapū, The Mill House Maui epitomizes the farm-to-table concept—and then some.

Sauteed Mahi MahiWhen you’re looking for all the best island flavors in every bite, you absolutely must try the Sauteed Mahi Mahi at Cafe O’Lei. To prepare this entrée, they saute fresh mahi-mahi in a Thai curry before topping it with mango compote, toasted coconut, and cashews. Steamed rice in a banana leaf arrives alongside to help you pick up all the flavorful sauce in every bite. Pork Belly BaoThe Pork Belly Bao lets you whet your appetite with savory flavors that’ll leave you craving more. They create this lunchtime appetizer by frying up pork belly until it’s perfectly crisp.

Dinner is definitely more upscale and expensive (though, this is still Maui, so flip-flops are always welcome), but if only one big night out is in the budget, The Mill House is where you should spend it. The fine dining setting, gorgeous views, and friendly service at Cafe O’Lei are sure to win you over, but the real magic is in their food. As a family-owned and operated joint, they put their whole hearts into the creation of every dish. From dreaming up the recipes and sourcing fresh ingredients to carefully preparing every selection and plating it up with artistic flair, they take pride in all they do to ensure you have a fantastic dining experience.

This is one that I’d want to have with a glass of white wine while feeding the ducks as they float by. Here’s a taste from lunch at the restaurant last week, just before the big grand opening festivities. All that is about to change, and Maui Tropical Plantation — with the Mill House Maui — is going to be at the center of its transformation. The project will be built in two, five-year phases on both sides of Honoapiilani Highway and the tropical plantation will be the “village center” and remain relatively untouched, Atherton said. A mix of single-family, multi-family, rural and country town mixed-use homes would be built around the village center, along with a 6-mile bike trail, parks and plenty of parking.

This one came topped with toasted coconut and a pineapple compote. Of coarse, the toppings were from the Maui Tropical Plantation. Then the panna cotta with fresh toasted coconut and a pineapple compote. Ponte’s dishes reflect Italian, Hawaiian, and Asian origins enlivened by local ingredients and a creative sensibility (e.g., taro-leaf risotto with bone marrow; gnocchi with shiitake, zucchini, and fried quinoa). Burgers, fish sandwiches, and the pricey steak ($55) come in more straightforward but no less tasty preparations.
